We Did It! 96km, 33hrs 40mins no sleep …

Mateship. Courage. Endurance. Sacrifice.

On Saturday the 15th of July 2017 I completed the Kokoda 96km Challenge at the Gold Coast. I filled in for a team member that dropped out of team ‘Rebels with a Cause’ with my good mate Kym that I have done the Sunshine Coast Marathon with twice, plus Chere and Christian were the other two awesome team members. Jacqui, Sean, Adam plus Ray were our sensational support crew, we could not have done this without them!

I felt pretty good the whole way and handled the no sleep ok, the main issue was pain / pressure under my feet. I’d done 50km on Fraser Island 2 weeks prior and 80km 3 weeks prior to that, wearing in two pairs of shoes. I started out with my trail runners for the 1st 28km, switched to my waterproof boots for the next 50km which were a god send for overnight in the rain and mud slop, then I borrowed a pair of Kym’s light trail runners for the last 15km; even drugs didn’t numb the pain at this stage!
I was so impressed with the team, my feet pulled up blister free with only a few hot spots and dead skin from two weeks earlier but the others copped terrible blisters the whole way and all our feet were treated by the medics with band aids and Elastoplast to assist with the pain to continue to the finish line. There will be a few lost toenails. (Chere’s busted feet below next to mine, YEOUCH, Careful Viewing! What a Champ!)
I burnt over 17,000 calories, my polar activity monitors says I hiked about 171,000 steps and I enjoyed a 13hr sleep on completion. My feet were a little tender and slightly swollen with fluid the next day.

Talk about the experience of a life time!!!

Kyms review the night after, July 17th, 3:12am:

Lying here in absolute agony I thought I’d write a post about The Kokoda Challenge 96km.
I was originally part of the support crew for my gorgeous friend Sunshine but when a place became available I got into the team. I had no idea WTF I was in for. I got a nasty cold on the Wednesday before and spent the whole thing popping Cold and Flu tablets and blowing my nose! I pulled my hammi ten days before and hurt my knee on the Monday before. Definitely the odd were stacking up! 
I honestly didn’t do much training for it, which wouldn’t surprise many of my friends. I completed the Brisbane Kokoda 30km six weeks ago and did a few walks and about two swims. Training for events is something I am not good at and I’m just lucky I have the mental strength to pull these sorts of crazy shit off.
I really shouldn’t have started because of my cold but I couldn’t let the team down. I thought I’d pull out when it got too hard physically and then be their support.
It was all going ok, although it wasn’t easy, and I was enjoying it. Making it up Polly’s Hill was ‘fun’ but then it started to rain. We put on our rain coats and kept going but everything was turning to mud.
As night fell we turned on our headlamps and I started to feel like James Bond on a mission  It was kinda fun being in the bush at night and I could see why people do this for fun. Then it kinda stopped being fun and was just bloody hard work with lots of bits I didn’t enjoy. I was going to pull out at 15km to go as my feet were excruciatingly painful. My blisters even had blisters! A quick fix by the podiatrist at the last support check point and a few pain killers and we were off again.
Finished in just under 34 hours. NEVER doing it again!!!

Kym is now planning next years event ….

Circumnavigated / strolled around the whole perimeter of Lake Mckenzie on Fraser Island today from Kingfisher Bay Resort; 24km, 6hrs = 2,345 calories ✔
734km on Fraser Island on ‘Foot’ to date – can’t wait to clock off 1,000km!

Awesome hike up Mt Walsh today at Biggenden followed by the bestest ever swim at Utopia rock pools! About 8km all up and smashed off 2,000 calories with the help of the incline!

Mt Walsh 2hrs 52 mins, 460m high, 3.86km = 1,460 calories ✔
+ 3.7km stroll to Utopia Falls = 600 calories (including swim) ✔

Turn right off the Maryborough – Biggenden Road 2km east of Biggenden or turn left 80km west of Maryborough. Travel a further 5.3km along the signposted National Park Road to the picnic area.

Utopia Rock falls from From Biggenden

From Biggenden travel along the Maryborough – Biggenden Road for 22km, turning right at Innooroolabar Road. Follow this road for about 2.5km and then take the first right at Utopia Road (no street sign). Follow Utopia Road until you reach the car park.

Start: Ronny Creek (Dove Lake) to Lake Windermere, skipped Waterfall Valley hut.
Marion’s Lookout (Highest point; Alpine plateau between Marions Lookout and Kitchen Hut, 1,250 m), no view, heavy rain, high wind, blown off the track a few times.
Too wet, windy & dangerous to climb to Cradle Mountain summit (1,545 m), no visibility.
Sun came out about lunch.
Boots and trail were wet for entire trip!
Set up tent in light rain.
iPhone got drenched (died), no RunKeeper, GoPro played up and heart rate monitor wouldn’t work! (No Technology! OMG)

Woke up at 5am to snow everywhere, camped in $15 tent from Kmart with a blue tarp slung over the top!
Feet and fingers were frozen, numb and sore!
Snowed for first two hours, high wind, some rain.
Stayed in a hut, dried clothes and socks, had a delish coffee.


SAT 10
Dec – 6:30am

18.2km hike
7:15 hours including breaks
Temp: -0.2 °C to 6.3 °C
Start: Pelion to Windy Ridge, skipped Kia Ora hut
Stayed in a hut.
Boots still wet, black muddy sludge, deep water puddles, roots and rocks everywhere. There are hardly any boardwalks at pictured in the brochures.
Passed Mt Ossa (1,617 m), Tassie’s highest mountain, to wet & windy to climb to summit.


SUN 11
Dec 2016 – start 5:30am finish 8:20 am
72hrs exact to the hour to complete the 65km Overland Track – Total hiking / walking time 23 hrs 30mins

‘Fraser Coast Rail Trail’

What an adventurous morning riding a loop of Hervey Bay via the ‘Fraser Coast Rail Trail’. Thanks to my good friend Svetlana (who is raising money for a cause here ) for an awesome 36.5 km bike ride. What a great start to the day! We were on bike paths most the way and left from Sunshine Acres to the pier return following the old Hervey Bay / Urangan railway line and beachfront bike path. We rode through cane fields, a dirt path at the Old Chapel Road section, through the centre of town, to the pier, along the foreshore and through the wooden boardwalk.

Sunshine Coast Marathon #2 Review!

On the 30th of August 2015 I ran the full 42.2km Sunshine Coast Marathon with my mate Kym in 05:12:43 mins. Kym and I are friends from high school and ran our first 10km together in 2009 at the Gold Coast Marathon.

This year on Sunday 21st of August we decided we would run together and try to crack 5hrs by trying the Jeff Galloway run / walk method with 3:1 splits (run 3 min: walk 1 min).
We started out excited after 4hrs sleep but our race didn’t exactly go to plan; at 1.3km in Kym told me she was in pain with a recent knee injury and would need to walk and I should go ahead! OMG!
I forged ahead and ran the first 9km then decided to start my splits. Feeling pretty good I decided to do longer 5:1 splits for the next 23km. At 32km for the last 10km I decided to change back to 3 min run : 30 second walk splits and ran the last 1.5km to cross the line via the red carpet!
Passing a friend of ours during the run she told me Kym was still struggling and was going to drop out at the half way mark 21km. Oh No I thought, knowing Kym would feel disappointed and must be in alot of pain! A few km later I hear a, “Hey, I’ve come good, I’m going to finish the race!” from Kym bounding towards me for a high five mid race with a massive smile! I was so happy for her, she did a negative split, running the last 21km NON STOP, heaps quicker and still managed a very good time 5:24 mins! I was so impressed with her mind work and determination to turn that race around! (Kym’s review below)
I had a good run, stayed focused on my splits, I didn’t hit a wall at any stage, and found I had heaps more energy than last year; at 38km another runner said I looked like I just started!
Crossing the line and checking my watch I realised I may have cracked the 5hr mark and achieved my goal and a PB!
Official time was 4:59:20, I just did it by 40 seconds!
I’m very happy to have found a system that works for me for marathons and to have completed another fun adventure with my mate Kym …… A MASSIVE Thanks to the Sunshine Coast Marathon organisers and volunteers, such a fun, professional and well run event!

Kym’s Review (Coach Kymba): Sunshine Coast Marathon recap.

I have NEVER cried in a run but I cried in this one. At the 1km I knew my knee wasn’t good. I stopped and took painkillers at the first water station.

I tried to stick to my race plan of 3 min run, 1 min walk. It hurt too much to run for 3 mins! At 6km I just couldn’t help myself and started crying. It was so painful and I was distraught at the thought of pulling out. I didn’t want a DNF. A lovely lady Amanda helped me through this. She told me to walk with her and together we would do it. Her aim was to be inside 6 hours.

So I walked and jogged and walked and shuffled my way through the next 9km. Amanda was walking too fast for me to keep up. I’d caught my friend Rach and stayed with her for a while. I told her to leave me as I was in too much pain. I’d taken more pain killers that started to kick in at around 19km. I was going to pull out but I’d managed to catch up with Rach and Reece who managed to inspire me to continue.

2 hours 50 mins of shear hell. I was only halfway ?

I then saw my buddy Cassie, who is an Ultra Marathoner. Her words of wisdom are ones I tell myself. ‘How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.’ I pushed on, no more tears! The pain was easing.

My great Bushido Brother Roy jumped in to run with me and he lifted my spirits. Seeing other running buddies out there was awesome too.

In a nutshell, the second 21k was so much better. I was strong!
2 hours 34……. A negative split!!!!
Total marathon time was 5:24. Not bad considering my previous injury.

As per usual I also had to get my Nature fix whilst in the Sunshine Coast Hinterlands, so for the three days prior to the marathon I hiked Mary Cairncross, Linda Garrett Circuit, Mapleton Falls and Buderim Falls!

Mangrove eco-tours @ ‘Tandora Walkabout Tours’

Today I had an awesome Mangrove eco-tour of ‘Tandora’ owned by the legendary and very knowledgeable Lindsay Titmarsh.
This was the second tour to date and I did the first half of the tour this time.
We had a lovely group of people and there was so much to learn. Some of the trees were between 200 to 900 years old and their different root systems were amazing!
There was at least 10 different species of mangroves (9 near us and one other further down), pink native berries, mangrove fruits, flowers & seeds and 25 species of crabs. The oxygen bubbles in the mud were interesting, some of the mangroves species excrete salt from their system via the back of their leaves and we were able to taste this; mistletoe and old mans beard also decorated the leaves.
It was the best stroll in the mud I’ve had in a long time …

Kingfisher Bay to Eurong 50km overnight hike

I’ve just returned from another Awesome 50km hike on Fraser Island being Kingfisher Bay Resort to Eurong Resort return overnight stay.

The white ghost gums near Central Station are so Amazing just in the middle of no where!

I enjoyed our buffet dinner at Eurong Beach Resort in my classy five finger under grip / non slip toes socks, an essential necessity for thongs in the cooler climates!

Smashed off 5,000 calories in 28hrs.

2 summits and a lookout! About 4hrs of climbing = 1,900 calories burnt for the day.

Distance: 3.6 km return
Time: Allow 4 hours walking time
Section 1: Start to rest area
Distance: 800 m one way
Time: Allow 1 hr return
Details: Start your walk near the picnic area and ensure you remain on the track at all times. This walk weaves you through thick vine forest where you can see the tracks from wallabies, bandicoots and brush-turkeys that have criss-crossed the track to venture through the forest. You arrive at a comfortable seat where you can take a break, surrounded by the peaceful sounds of the mountain.
This walk is rated as moderate to strenuous. Turn back at this point if you are having any difficulty. The track from here to the summit is a continuous, steep climb.

Woowoonga is about 90 minutes’ drive from Maryborough, 60 minutes’ drive from Bundaberg and 14 km north of Biggenden. Turn off the Childers Road into Giles Road 6.5 km north of Biggenden. Drive 2.5 km then turn left into Woowoonga Hall Road. Continue for 2 km then turn right into Mount Woowoonga Road and continue 3 km to the picnic area.

OPRAH hits BrisVegas!

I had a wonderful time last night at the Oprah concert in Brisbane, I always like to learn from the absolute best on subjects, especially spirituality! Oprah’s talk was so inspiring and engaging I have listed some of my notes I scribbled down in the dark. I even took a photo of the big screen, not even realising at the time that the photo was off myself, the camera was on me!!

I didn’t quite get my ‘real’ selfie photo with Oprah this time but I have been putting it out to the Universe, so the Law of Attraction will provide! After all, it is Law!  🙂

Bikram Yoga BrisVegas

I have had a lovely stay in Brisbane the past week catching up with family at a wedding and my dear friend Naomi and made the most of South Bank, The Botanical Gardens, Kangaroo Point Stairs, the Storey Bridge and Riverside walk for my exercise (walks & runs)!

I also did my first ever Bikram Yoga class, well four actually in just one week!!
90mins, 40 degrees, 26 postures + two breathing techniques!

OMG my hamstrings were killing me, everything was aching and I had a great workout! Even though my muscle are very tight | constricted, I still tried to do my best at beginners level for the positions.
Such a wonderful class with our instructor Ben giving me excellent advice on how to get the best out of my workouts and complementing me on little improvements. I learnt so much about the wonderful exercises and benefits from Ben’s extensive knowledge, it’s all so very interesting! I felt marvellous after each class and was so relaxed!

I burnt 450 calories at each session so that is a good workout in itself!

Sunshine Coast Marathon!

What a FUN weekend at the Sunshine Coast Marathon!

On the 30th of August I ran the full 42.2km Sunshine Coast Marathon with my mate Kym in 05:12:43 mins.
Kym and I are friends from high school and ran our first 10km together 6 years ago at the Gold Coast Marathon.
As we were both celebrating birthdays and turning 40 years old the following week we decided to celebrate by running 42.2km!!!!  Fit and Glamorous at 40 being the new 30!
I also met Ryan the Running Guy a friend of Kyms.

I caught up with my good friend Michelle from Hervey Bay who is training each weekend at Mooloolaba for the Na Wahine Aka Kai. We had a delicious Caesar Salad at Augello’s Italian Restaurant Mooloolaba Sunshine Coast.

I visited Buderim Falls again for some photography and had brekkie after the run with my Author Friend Wayne Ellis who wrote “Kissing the Black Dog”.

A huge thank you to my good friend Cheryl Virgo ( Virgos Natural Therapies ) for my official Sunshine Coast Marathon “Road Runner Award” she presented to me this morning at her 6.5km Fraser Coast Fitness & Health community beach stroll. FRASER COAST FITNESS & HEALTH EXPO 2015

In Queensland 65% of adults and 28% of children are overweight or obese which includes 50% of the Fraser Coast being overweight or obese.

Therefore being very passionate about fitness, fun & health I’ve organised today’s ‘Step into Spring’ FITNESS & HEALTH EXPO to raise awareness, promote prevention and help educate about Fitness & Health on the Fraser Coast! Please note: Audience participation is compulsory!

I have written and published a ‘4 Week Program’ which is a Mind, Meal & Exercise Plan that teaches people the tools and skills to apply for a long term happy healthy lifestyle, which will is available at the Zumba stall as I hope to revolutionise the Fraser Coast! I find the Fraser Coast obesity epidemic very serious and am working towards creating a massive community lifestyle overhaul campaign with the help of other like minded professionals!

This event would not be possible without the Awesome support of Karen Chatfield the site manager and the Hervey Bay Council for the Arts​ who generously gave us one of their open mike days for the event, covered the insurance plus all stall fees have been donated back to them for their support of this fun day.

I would like extend a huge thanks to Katie form Z Club Dance Fitness for kindly providing the use of her awesome sound equipment for the day, plus she will be doing some high energy zumba for us to participate in also!

I would like to thank my Fraser Coast Fitness & Health friends, where are you, hand up ladies, if you have any questions today just ask the girls. We also go for a walk every Wednesday at 6:30am with Cheryl from the Torquay Jetty to the pier return and all are welcome to join us.

A massive thank you to the Amazing team of local businesses have come on board to showcase the high level of professional services, products, skills, tools and knowledge available to all. This will be a huge day of fun with maximum audience participation! There are stalls, performances, talks and demos including and on – Bio-aging, Massage, Foot Reflexology, Crossfit, Gyms, Meditation, Yoga, Face Painting, Zumba, Belly Dancers, Martial Arts, Tennis, Burlesque & Fitness Demos plus heaps more.

We will also be raising funds for Bayside Transformations one of our local Residential Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation non for profit Program, who will be manning the ‘healthy option’ BBQ and they have a stall with more info. I would also like to mention that Climbmax the rock wall here is donating 10% of their profits from today to Bayside so make sure you have a climb!

We are a team of passionate individuals and businesses on the Fraser Coast that work together to raise awareness and help others achieve a new way of life and thinking that is healthy, exciting, fun and will make you happy!

Our only competition is laziness, a sedentary lifestyle, poor choices, mental health, fast and junk food plus the television!

O’Reillys Rainforest Retreat – We’re on the Road to No Where!

Some pictures from my trip to O’Reillys Rainforest Retreat last weekend.

In rainforest I am definitely, “In my element – You are where you should be and you fit in. You’re in your zone and no one can stop your game.”

I went down for a 35km paid hike to the Stinson plane crash, which is supposedly being rescheduled due our inebriated tour guide getting us, a group of eleven completely lost!

We walked lost in circles for 9km and 7.5hrs once away from Echo point and were told prior to our walk by the guide we would not even be going to the Stinson crash site, which is why we were there?

O’Reillys General Manager Shane O’Reilly stated to me on the phone they went through after our hike and the track was not even cleared so none of the group would have made the hike anyway, aside from the fact that the guide was drinking heavily the night prior, also took four bottles of wine on the hike and not knowing where to go.

O’Reillys proudly boasts 100 years of hiking this route, yet does not know the accessibility or check the tracks condition before advertising paid hikes to the public?

I have reached an agreement with O’Reillys Rainforest Retreat General Manager Shane O’Reilly in relation to remuneration for the inconvenience and dangerous situation, that I am now satisfied with.

It appears General Manager Shane O’Reilly has reneged and is not extending the offer of a free walk to me anymore …..

Positives of the hike, I met a lot of nice people & still hiked 25km mainly in circles. Here is an awesome clip made by one of the hikers  … ‘We’re on the Road to No Where!’

I also went to Buderim Falls,  Kondalilla Falls, Mapleton Falls & climbed Mt Cooroora at Pomona. Whilst I was away two of my photos were used in the background on Hannah McEwan’s weather segment on WIN News Wide Bay. How very exciting ….

Hay House Writers Seminar in Sydney

Over the past weekend I had the amazing opportunity of attending the Hay House Writers Seminar in Sydney as I had been fortunate due to the help and support of many voting for me and had WON a free ticket to the event.
Talk about Awesome, I learnt so much and had many questions and thoughts answered in relation to my self-published soon to be BEST SELLING ‘4 Week Program!’ plus my marketing jeanette maynes hao house writers seminarplan, my platforms, my websites and the way I am implementing my goals and book / program within the community.
The energy and vibration in the room was electric and I met so many wonderful friendly like minded people. I hung out with a lovely lady and made a new friend also a ticket winner being Melissa Gibson a psychic, we got along fabulously – the Butterfly Whisperer.
Now to finalise my Synopsis to present to Hay House!
Someone (or maybe more than one person) who attended the seminar will WIN a publishing package with them; I could be the next best selling author accelerating my passion to “Get Australia Motivated!”. I hope so as I can feel it within my whole being!!

I had the pleasure of meeting and having a photo with the authors in order (the 1st four even before the seminar started!) as per my Law of Attraction photo print out (pretty powerful – reminds me of my Law of Attraction Donald Trump picture here) and the rest throughout the two days. I was also on the print out as a featured author as I will be speaking at the seminar in the future (L.O.A. at work). I even had a photo taken on stage with my book to assist my Law of Attraction processes! All the authors had such inspiring stories and were great at public speaking.

After the seminar I ran 11.5km around Sydney for some exercise and even managed to get my weekly stair runs in at the ‘Oprah’ House,  proudly promoting the Fraser Coast Health & Fitness Community Action Group.

I received quite a few looks and comments, it appears fluro yellow socks and runners are not very common in Sydney!

GOAL # 1 – REDUCE OBESITY ON THE FRASER COAST FROM 70% TO 50% WITH POSITIVE AND GOAL ORIENTATED INITIATIVES INTURN DRAMATICALLY LOWERING DIABETES!
We need to have at least 1,000 people doing my ‘4 Week Program’ to create a flow on effect to change 20,000 people to achieve the goal of dropping the obesity / overweight statistic from 70% to 50% on the Fraser Coast! (this could be executed in as short a time frame as 12 months!) Just imagine how happy, energetic, motivated and productive everyone would be! Too Exciting! (Then I / We can start on the rest of the 63% of Australia!)
