Opinions Please; Fraser Coast Logo

Recently I was reading Councillor Sue Brooks Blog and came a cross a mention in regards to the new Fraser Coast Regional Council Logo;

Logo and Branding

….On Thursday we launched the new regional branding and corporate logo. This was developed via Cr Anne Nioa’s portfolio. I like the overall effect that the branding gives. The Fraser Coast wording is similar to that used by Tourism Queensland so it avoids confusion. I don’t think it would be possible to produce something that everyone likes and I personally don’t ‘like’ some minor aspects of the ‘package’ but I’m glad that we have an image with which  to ‘label’ ourselves. The magazine published by Council called “Our Fraser Coast” showcases the branding and you should receive a copy via your letterbox in the near future. Do let us know if you don’t receive one by the end of Sept.  Advertising in this magazine offset the cost of producing it.

This was my response:

Hi Sue,

New logo, hhhhhhhhhmmmmm, I guess it looks a tad fresher than the font in a box (publisher clipart) (Pictured right) we were previously using to represent out prestigious area. (Shame!)

I’ve noticed the new logo (pictured below) is designed by a non local lady in Mt Gravatt who does not have a business website, so I am wondering how our council could view her portfolio to come to a decision that she would be best suited to design a logo for an area she doesn’t reside in. Is she related to (a Councillor) * by any chance?

I have also noticed the Fraser Coast Regional Council website is designed and hosted by a business in Roma Street Brisbane.

Also could you please advise who is designing & printing the new magazine, will this also be a business that is not located in the Fraser Coast Regional Council area?

I am astounded that the Council so obviously does not support or put money back into the local advertising | marketing industry when there are 25+ graphic designers, printers, website designers and hosting providers within the Fraser Coast. Many are ‘Award Winning’ in their fields and are more than capable of performing the required tasks and achieving extraordinary results!

Your views on this matter would be greatly appreciated…

Kind regards
Jeanette

Ps. As for the Hervey Bay symbol “What the ….?”

Would you please be kind enough to direct my queries to Anne Nioa as it was her portfolio, she may have some insight?

I am wondering what others think on this? Please comment….

    Wow.

    Why do councils always spend tons of $ on hopeless, ugly designs (if you could call it that)? They have no principals and NO idea at all about design – and apparently neither does the so called ‘graphic designer’ (i use that term loosely)!

    Gah! So awful. It’s worse than clip-art-esque… it’s incredibly boring clipart from the 1980′s.

    That just makes me cringe.

    Good on ya for telling them so.

    Hi El, always great to have the opinion of another professional designer, I must say we are like minded!

    I don’t have a problem with the design chosen but I do have a problem that the logo was not designed by a local. We have such talent here on the Fraser Coast. It is a pity that various local professionals were not asked to submit some ideas from which a choice could have been made. Unfortunately the mindset of those in charge is that if something comes from Brisbane or further south it has to be superior.

    This afternoon I had a lengthy off record discussion with my mate Mick, (Fraser Coast Regional Council Mayor) who was kind enough to give me this statement;

    “The new Fraser Coast Regional Council is currently reviewing the structures in place & developing policies that will support local businesses and suppliers to enable the opportunity to provide services to Council, as Councillors should always support local business.”

    Thanks heaps Mick your support is always really appreciated!!!

    Ps. is it possible to advise Anne Nioa of this….?

    Jeanette,
    Mayor Mick’s of the record comments are a cop-out.
    All four councils should have been pursuing local business support policies right from the start. If they had, had such policies in place this would have never happened? It looks like mayor Mick is running a guna council. One wonders what else their guna do?

    To the best of my knowledge, it appears that, Fraser Coast Regional Council (FCRC);

    1st FCRC Logo & Brand Identity – designed in Sydney
    Current FCRC Logo & Brand Identity – designed in Mount Gravatt
    FCRC Website – designed in Brisbane
    FCRC Magazine – designed and printed in Mount Gravatt
    FCRC Tiro Website – designed in Brisbane
    FCRC Maryborough Website – designed in Bundaberg
    FCRC Woocoo Website – designed in Brisbane

    Jeanette,
    I am no artist and don’t claim to be, but have been thinking (I know,not often). Our interim logo
    was simple,clean and I suggest cheap. What more did we need? If our council had money to spend,
    why not on our roads, footpaths etc? Who really takes much notice of a towns logo? I don’t even know what Bundy’s is.

    I guess it’s similar to what I tell my clients, if your logo and branding looks below average people may perceive this to also reflect your business (in this case city), services and product. If the competitor’s logo and branding is extremely professional I know who I would choose to do business with (visit).
    Say Bundy’s branding is more professional that ours they may gain a huge percentage of our local, national and international tourism market and dollars. A logo and branding is extremely important and so is the fact the person designing it has a thorough knowledge of the area | project and as if possible as in this case the money to create this appearance should also be kept in the local community by the Council.
    Simple and clean original logos are always the best but not clipart that is used repeatedly worldwide.
    I personally think the Council should hurry up and build a convention centre in Hervey Bay but we won’t have that debate again, ha ha…..

    Keep up the great work Jeanette.. council needs to be held accountable to the community.

    They can come up with all the excuses they like but at the end of the day they really should be leading by example and encouraging local businesses to support each other.
